Sleeping St. Joseph Devotion
March 19th
The devotion to Sleeping Saint Joseph is a powerful reminder of trust, surrender, and quiet strength. It reflects Saint Joseph’s role as the guardian who “works while he sleeps,” listening attentively to God even in rest.
Though Saint Joseph never speaks in the Gospels, he listens deeply. God communicates with him through dreams, and Joseph responds with immediate faith and action. His silence becomes a model of complete trust in God’s divine plan.
St. Joseph’s Four Dreams in Scripture
In the Gospel of Matthew, God speaks to Saint Joseph in four pivotal dreams:
1. Accepting Mary (Matthew 1:20–21)
An angel tells Joseph not to fear taking Mary as his wife, for her child is conceived by the Holy Spirit. Trusting God completely, Joseph welcomes her into his home.
2. Flight to Egypt (Matthew 2:13)
After Jesus’ birth, Joseph is warned in a dream to flee to Egypt because King Herod seeks to kill the child. Despite uncertainty and danger, Joseph obeys without hesitation.
3. Return to Israel (Matthew 2:19–20)
Following Herod’s death, Joseph is told to return home. Once again, he uproots his family and follows God’s direction.
4. Settlement in Nazareth (Matthew 2:22)
In his final dream, Joseph is guided to settle in Nazareth, fulfilling the prophecy that Jesus would be called a Nazorean.

The Devotion and Pope Francis
This devotion gained worldwide attention through Pope Francis, who keeps a statue of Sleeping St. Joseph on his desk.
When facing difficulties, he writes his intentions on a piece of paper and places them beneath the statue.
This simple yet powerful gesture represents:
- “Sleeping on it” – entrusting problems to God through Joseph
- Trustful Rest – letting go of anxiety and allowing God to act
During a 2015 trip to the Philippines, Pope Francis shared:
“Even when he is asleep, he looks after the Church.”
He encourages believers to imitate Joseph—resting in God with trust, but also rising promptly to act when called.

A Prayer to Sleeping Saint Joseph
O Saint Joseph,
you are a man greatly favored by the Most High.
The angel of the Lord appeared to you in dreams
to guide and protect the Holy Family.
You were silent, yet strong—
a faithful and courageous protector.
As you rest in the Lord,
confident in His power and goodness,
look upon me with care.
Take my need (mention your intention),
hold it in your heart,
dream of it,
and present it to your Son.
Help me to hear God’s voice,
to rise with courage,
and to act with love.
I praise and thank God with joy.
Saint Joseph, pray for us. Amen.
